What are the guidelines to maintain timber parts?

Wood is a natural, durable material, but regular maintenance is essential to keep it safe and looking great over time. Here are our tips for maintaining the wooden parts of your climbing frame:

Inspection and Repair

  • Regularly inspect all timber parts, paying special attention to posts that are critical for stability.

  • Replace any structurally damaged or rot-affected timber parts immediately.

  • Treat minor damage with an approved preservative to extend the life of the wood.

  • Be vigilant about timber in direct contact with the ground/soil, as it’s more prone to deterioration.

Surface Treatment

  • Sand any sharp or rough edges, splinters, or corners using the provided sand pad or medium-grade sandpaper wrapped around a block of timber.

  • Use child-safe, nontoxic sealants or stains to protect against UV rays, moisture, and cracking. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

  • For green stains, algae, or weathering, use an oxalic acid-based stain remover or agents like wood bleach, vinegar, or bleach to clean and restore the wood. Be cautious with pressure washers to avoid damaging the surface.

Seasonal Changes

  • Be aware that wood naturally expands and contracts with temperature and humidity changes. Small surface cracks are normal and do not affect the structure.

  • Pressure-treated timber (e.g., Pine or Fir) and naturally rot-resistant wood (e.g., Douglas) are highly durable but still subject to natural weathering.

  • Remove fungi and algae to prevent wood rot caused by microorganisms thriving in damp environments.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Wait at least 4 weeks after assembly before applying any treatment to allow the wood to acclimate.

  • Regularly clean the wood and reapply protective treatments every few years to keep it in top condition.

  • Treatments like wood oil, stain, or varnish can help preserve the wood’s original color and protect against moisture and UV rays.
