Black spots (Black fungi)

It is important to note that the appearance of black surface mold on playground equipment does not necessarily mean that the equipment is no longer safe to use. However, if the mold is left untreated,  it can effect and weaken the wood, which could potentially lead to safety hazards.

To prevent the growth of black surface mold on your playground equipment, it is recommended that you keep the equipment clean and dry. Regularly removing any debris, leaves, or other organic materials that may accumulate on the equipment can help to prevent the growth of mold.

Additionally, it is a good idea to apply a protective coating to the wood to help prevent moisture from penetrating the surface. This can be done using a clear, waterproof sealant that is specifically designed for use on outdoor wooden surfaces.

If you do notice the appearance of black surface mold on your playground equipment, it is important to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage. With the right cleaning and treatment methods, you can effectively remove the mold and restore the safety and lifespan of your playground equipment.

You can try first to remove it with a mixture of warm water and a little dish soap. If this doesn't work, you can attempt to use an anti-mold spot cleaner. Do this carefully and in a localized manner. Soda can also be used, which often works well and is less aggressive.

Once the black spots are removed, it's best to use a transparent impregnator to prevent these spots from recurring.
