Advantages of Douglas Fir
Moisture Resistance:
- The high resin content makes Douglas fir resistant to fungal attack due to moisture.
- Less swelling and shrinking than other softwoods, making it more dimensionally stable and durable.
- The natural protection provided by the resin makes Douglas fir more resistant to rot and decay.
Insect Resistance:
- High resin content is insect repellent such as woodworms.
- The dense structure of the wood makes it difficult for insects to attack the wood.
- More resistant to mold and blue stain than wood from other softwoods.
Other advantages:
- Hardest softwood species and therefore robust and suitable for construction purposes.
- Beautiful appearance with a reddish-brown color and distinctive grain.
- Sustainable and environmentally friendly, as it comes from local forests.
Note:
- Douglas fir is also not completely resistant to weathering.
- The wood should not be placed on a permanently moist substrate.
- Moss and algae growth can occur under tall trees.
- In shady places, the wood may take longer to dry.
