How can I create a safe play area around my climbing frame?

Planning a safe and fun play area for your children is easy with a little preparation. Follow these steps to ensure your climbing frame is set up securely:

1. Safe Play Zone

  • Maintain a safety zone of 200 cm (6.5 ft) around the playset on all sides.
  • Keep this area free from obstacles like:
    • Structures or fences.
    • Overhanging branches, laundry lines, or electrical wires.
  • Remove any tripping hazards such as rocks, stumps, or roots.
  • Avoid placing the playset near walkways or pathways to prevent accidental collisions.

2. Choosing the Right Spot

  • Select a flat, level area for your climbing frame.
    • Important: Installing on sloped ground can loosen connections over time and increase the risk of tipping.
  • If the slide faces south, consider adding shade to prevent it from overheating in direct sunlight, making it more comfortable for children.

3. Safe Surfacing

  • Jungle Gym playsets have a maximum platform height of 1.45 m, so the ground surface should use impact-absorbing material rated for a fall height of at least 1.50 m.
  • Ensure any edging used to contain ground cover is placed outside the safety zone.
  • Avoid thin mats or carpeting, as they don’t provide adequate cushioning.
  • Ensure proper drainage to prevent water buildup in the play area.

4. Recommended Surface Materials

Choose surfaces that provide proper cushioning, such as:

  • Grass.
  • Rubber tiles (follow supplier guidelines).
  • Poured-in-place rubber surfaces (follow supplier guidelines).
  • Fine sand.
  • Fine gravel.
  • Uniform timber chips.
  • Double shredded bark mulch.
