What should I know about the Natural Characteristics of Jungle Gym timber?

At Jungle Gym, we take pride in using high-quality, natural wood for our playground equipment. However, because wood is a natural material, it may show certain characteristics that are completely normal. These do not impact the safety, strength, or durability of your play equipment. Here’s what you might notice:

 Cracks

  • Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, which may cause cracks.

  • Cracks smaller than ¼ of the wood’s length or cross-section will not affect the strength or stability of your playground equipment.

Rough Surfaces & Splinters

  • Despite our careful selection, some parts may have rough spots or splinters, especially around knots or edges.

  • These are purely aesthetic and can be smoothed out with light sanding if needed.

Knots

  • Knots are natural parts of the wood where branches once grew. They add character to the wood and do not weaken it.

Small Holes (Insect Exit Holes)

  • Occasionally, you might see tiny holes where insects exited the wood. This is normal and occurs after the wood is cut, as it loses its nutritional value.

  • These holes do not affect the strength or quality of the wood.

Sticky Spots (Resin Pockets)

  • Coniferous trees like pine and spruce produce resin naturally. It may seep out, especially in warm weather.

  • To remove resin, try scraping it off with a brush or soft tool. You can also use a mild heat source or a resin removal agent. Be careful not to damage the wood’s finish.

Black Spots (Black Fungi)

  • Black spots can appear if the wood is exposed to moisture, leading to surface mould. This is usually not harmful if addressed promptly.

  • Keep your playground equipment clean and dry to prevent mould. If it appears, clean with warm soapy water or an anti-mold cleaner. Follow up with a waterproof sealant to protect the wood.

Discolorations (Douglas Wood & Hardware)

  • Douglas wood can darken where it contacts metal hardware, especially in moist conditions.

  • These stains are only superficial and can be lightly sanded away if desired.

Tips for Maintenance

  • Regularly clean your climbing frame to keep it in top condition.

  • Apply a clear, waterproof sealant to protect against moisture and mould.

  • If you notice any rough spots, light sanding can help keep surfaces smooth and splinter-free.

By understanding these natural characteristics, you can enjoy your playground equipment for years to come, knowing it’s built to last!
