What should I know about the Natural Production Characteristics of Jungle Gym timber?

At Jungle Gym, we treat our wood with care to ensure it’s durable and safe for your climbing frame. However, during the treatment process, some natural deviations can occur. These are completely normal and do not affect the quality or safety of your climbing frame. Here’s what you might notice:

White salt crystals (Chemical reaction between resin and impregnation agent)

  • You might see white stains on the wood. This happens when the natural resin in the wood reacts with the preservative we use.

  • These stains, known as resin bleeding, are only on the surface and will naturally fade with exposure to sunlight. They do not impact the strength of the wood.

Green Bloom (Preservative Residue)

  • The wood may have greenish spots due to the copper-based preservative used in treatment.

  • These green spots are common and will disappear after a few weeks in the sun. If needed, you can lightly sand the areas for a smoother finish.

White Spots (Mildew)

  • Sometimes, white spots may appear on freshly treated wood, especially during warm months when the wood retains moisture.

  • These spots are simply surface mildew and are harmless. They will disappear naturally as the wood dries.

  • Tip: Remove any plastic film covering the wood upon delivery to prevent moisture buildup.

What to Do If Your Timber Arrives Damp or With Spots

Since wood is a natural material, it may sometimes arrive with some moisture or minor surface marks. Here’s how to handle it:

  1. Let It Dry: Place the wood in a dry, well-ventilated area.

  2. Clean Stains: Use mild soap and water to clean any spots. For tougher stains, an oxalic acid-based cleaner can help.

  3. Smooth Rough Areas: Lightly sand any splinters or rough patches for a smooth finish.

Splinters

  • You may find small splinters on the ends of some wooden parts. This happens during the cutting process.

  • Simply sand these areas to keep them smooth and safe for play.

Sunlight Discoloration

  • During storage, some parts of the wood may discolor if exposed to sunlight.

  • This is temporary, and the color will even out after a few weeks of sun exposure.

Caring for Your Playset

These natural characteristics are part of the wood’s charm and don’t affect its durability. With a little care, your Jungle Gym will stay beautiful and safe for years of outdoor fun!
