What type of ground surface is required under a Jungle Gym climbing frame?

For the best and safest play experience, it’s important to install your Jungle Gym climbing frame on the right type of ground surface.

Recommended Surfaces

  • Unpaved, Steady Surface:
  • Grass: A natural and forgiving surface that provides good shock absorption.
  • Sand: A solid layer of sand also offers excellent stability and cushioning.
Shock absorption surfaces
Place the playset on a stable, unpaved surface like grass or a thick layer of sand. Avoid placing it on hard surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, or any similar materials, including carpet or artificial grass laid over hard surfaces, as they can increase the risk of serious injury if a child falls. Ensure that the playset is installed on shock-absorbing ground, both directly underneath and within a 200 cm (6.5’) radius around the entire play area, safe play area.

Material Depth

  • Fine sand 50 cm (20 inch)
  • Fine gravel 50 cm (20 inch)
  • Uniform timber chips 50 cm (20 inch)
  • Double shredded bark mulch 50 cm (20 inch)

By adhering to the prescribed depth of shockabsorbing loose-fill materials as listed in the table above, the necessary impact attenuation is achieved. When using rubber tiles or poured-in-place rubber surfaces ensure thatthe impact attenuation meets the required critical fall height (CFH) of 1.50 metres, as specified for Jungle Gym play equipment. Additionally, ensure proper drainage. For the best and safest play experience, it’s important to install your Jungle Gym climbing frame on the right type of ground surface.

Surfaces to Avoid

  • Hard Surfaces:
  • Concrete, gravel, or asphalt do not provide the necessary shock absorption for safe play and can increase the risk of injuries.
  • Sloping Ground:
  • Uneven or sloped surfaces can cause instability, putting extra stress on joints and connections, which may loosen or break over time.

By choosing a flat, unpaved, and steady surface, you’ll ensure your climbing frame stays secure and safe, providing years of carefree fun for your children!
